The Salem Witch Trials and the Trial of Rebecca Nurse

In the midwinter of 1691/92, girls living in Salem Village began to fall into horrid fits, and their parents tried to discover what was causing their distress. In late February, the village doctor concluded that the girls were being afflicted by witchcraft; and the girls, at the urging of their elders, named three witches -- Tituba, Sarah Good and Sarah Osburn.

Hear the rest of the story about the trial of Rebecca Nurse. The group will be led by a docent through the homestead and Meeting House where students will see and a hear a slide show presentation about the Salem Witch Trials.

Through the Eyes of a Pequot Child

This one hour tour is led by an exhibit interpreter and will look at Pequot children's lives today and long ago. Beginning with a presentation about contemporary kids, groups will then move to an immersion experience in the 16th Century Pequot Village. In the village, students will look at life through the eyes of Pequot children in the summer of 1550: what they ate, what they wore, and where they lived with their families.

Families can tour the museum on their own after the guided tour. You can expect to take the rest of the day to see all the exhibits.

    Geography & Mapping Skills

Housed in a three-story glass atrium at the company's headquarters in Yarmouth, Maine, this astounding globe took two years to build and represents Earth as it is seen from space. It's over 41 feet in diameter, it rotates just like the real Earth and it was created from one of the largest mapping databases in the world. Its name is Eartha and it is the world's largest moving globe! Every continent is beautifully detailed, with vivid colors illustrating all levels of vegetation, major roadways and cities. Ocean depths are also completely represented.

After a docent led tour and explanation of 'Eartha' students will participate in a mapping skills program. Using a map that is painted onto the classroom floor, students will learn orienteering skills such as how to use longitude and latitude, how to use a compass, how to measure distances by the pacing method and how to plot items onto a mapping grid. Students will break into small groups to complete a journey using their new orienteering skills and the painted map.
